Lupe Fiasco Bashes Obama

Lupe Fiasco was escorted off the stage by security in Washington, D.C. on Sunday after insulting President Barack Obama and performing an antiwar song during an inauguration themed show. The Chicago native was booked to headline the StartUp RockOn concert to celebrate the president's re-election. However, according to Politico the rapper was "repeating politically charged lyrics for an unusually long time." Josh Rogin, a writer at Foreign Policy tweeted about the event. This is not the first time the 30-year-old rapper has spoken out against Obama. In a June 2011 interview on CBS News' "What's Trending" he said: "To me, the biggest terrorist is Obama in the United States of America." Fiasco made his position against the president clear again in July of 2012 when he told Philadelphia's Power 99: "On one hand you have someone who is a great speaker, but kills little children, our president." The rapper addresses political themes in many of his songs, including "Words I Never Said". In the video, taken at the inaugural concert, he is performing part of that song in which he raps: "Limbaugh is a racist, Glenn Beck is a racist. Gaza Strip was getting bombed, Obama didn't say sh*t. That's…

Casting for James Brown biopic is underway

The long-awaited big screen biopic for the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, is finally picking up steam. The project, which was originally linked to filmmaker Spike Lee, is now being helmed by Tate Taylor, director of The Help. The film is being co-produced by Brian Grazer (Inside Man) and legendary Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. "It's a great honor to be involved with a project as rich as the story of the legendary James Brown. He was a mesmerizing performer with a fascinating life," said Jagger. Both Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes have been floated as potential contenders for the lead role. "There's the most incredible script that Spike Lee worked on that has everything in it, but you have to get the rights from the people who have the rights to James' story... and getting them all together... which makes it hard to come together... but I hope it comes together... it's a great, great piece," said Murphy on Black Tree TV. "We're going to start casting and we're going to have to test lots of actors and be determined to pick the right one," Grazer said in an interview with Rolling Stone. "No movie starts in a day.…

André 3000 Says It’s A Remix, Not A Reunion

When Big Boi jumped on Frank Ocean's "Pink Matter" featuring fellow OutKast member André 3000, did anyone reach out and touch somebody's hand to declare, "OUTKAST IS BACK, B**CH!?" I didn't think so either, but maybe André 3000 heard differently since he felt compelled to release a statement to SPIN to declare in so many words that the band is not back together. I thought past interviews from both made that clear, but just in case any of these new Big Boi enhanced remixes – which Dré wants you to know are unofficial – confused anyone of that point, Dré is here to clarify. Here's the statement: "It's important for me to be clear about the origins of my contributions to 'Pink Matter' and 'Sorry.' I was approached as a solo artist by both Frank Ocean & Tip. I discussed musical direction with each artist and completed my verses. It was after that when Big Boi's name came up. I never want to mislead our audience – I worried that some would think these were Outkast collaborations. These songs are not Outkast collaborations. I discussed this rationale with Big, Frank and T.I. and everyone agreed. That is why I was…

DMX To Appear on OWN'S 'Iyanla: Fix My Life'

Whew praise Jesus in the sanctuary right now! You don't even have to be a fan of DMX to know when this man says it's dark and hell is hot, the hell he's talking about is his own life. I'd consider X to be one of the most emotional rappers around — not in the Drake sense — because you can feel the pain in his lyrics and even in his interviews, and that's why I'm super psyched Iyanla is going to have a chat with him on the next season of her new hit show on OWN: "Iyanla Fix My Life." If you watched "Couple's Therapy" two seasons ago, you'd recall the heartfelt breakdown DMX had as he talked about his mother not loving him as a child. The 42-year-old sobbed like a baby when he talked about the lack of a motherly influence, and that disconnect was used to explain why he's cheated on his wife, Tashira, umpteenth times, not to mention his battle with drugs and alcohol. Though the VH1 show didn't seem to mend much for X or his wife, who is rumored to have filed for divorce from him immediately after the series ended, I…
Yes, folks, the 'D' is silent. But that's about the only thing one cannot hear amid the media buzz that surrounds Quentin Tarantino's latest homage to arguably the darkest part of American history. Everyone has something to say about the new film 'Django Unchained'. Viewer opinion on the movie's content is about as numerous and varied as are mouths making the claims. Whether surfing the message boards on your favorite gossip sites, browsing social media, or even watching the national news, spectators can agree on one thing: this movie has people talking. Yet, the conversation that surrounds this film might be the first of its kind. It is a fascinating tale that causes many of us to walk out of the theater not knowing 'what' to think. Talk Show host Tavis Smiley has called 'Django' a spoof of American slavery. Others, most notably the movie's cast and Director, argue that it is rather an ugly truth, and a glimpse at a reality otherwise eradicated from history books. Are we so quick to dismiss the film's main character as a mere figment of Tarantino's wild imagination? Is Jamie Foxx's on screen persona nothing more than a fabricated black superhero? Perhaps we…

Nicki Minaj Inks Fashion Deal with Kmart

Nicki Minaj will soon be appearing in a Kmart aisle near you. The eccentric singer/rapper announced that she will be producing a lifestyle brand for the retail chain. The lifestyle brand will include her own fashion and accessory line, as well as housewares. The American Idol judge commented on the new deal, saying: "I am so excited to work with this iconic, mass retailer and to bring affordable fashion to my beautiful barbz all across the U.S." Minaj made the announcement alongside Maroon Five lead singer, and co-host of NBC's "The Voice," Adam Levine, who also has a new Kmart clothing line. Sears Holdings, which owns Kmart, says it hopes the two new lines will drive more traffic to their online shopping destination, ShopYourWay.com. "We are thrilled to align Kmart and Shop Your Way with two of America's superstars," said Imran Kooma, executive vice president and president of Marketing & Online at Sears Holdings. Tyler Perry's rough year at the movies just get worse. Following the underwhelming performance of Madea's Witness Protection and the outright failure of his first foray into action, Alex Cross, the media mogul has been nominated for several 'Razzies,' the comic award given out annually for the year's worst films. Madea's Witness Protection was nominated in five different categories: Worst actress: Tyler Perry (in drag)Worst screen couple: Tyler Perry & His Drag Get-UpWorst director: Tyler PerryWorst screen ensembleWorst remake, rip-off or sequelTo add insult to injury, Tyler Perry was also included alongside fellow black actor Eddie Murphy (for A Thousand Words) in the worst actor category for his part in the thriller Alex Cross. For 32 years, the Razzies have been a hilarious anecdote of the highbrow award season fare. In the past some actors have even been good enough sports to accept their 'worst actress' or 'worst actor' trophies in person. For instance, Bill Cosby collected his in 1988 for the notorious flop Leonard Part 6, and Halle Berry spoofed her infamous, tearful Oscar speech after winning a Razzie for her widely-mocked role in 2004′s Catwoman. Who knows if Perry will actually show up at the Razzie Awards, but he…
Talk show host Tavis Smiley has joined Spike Lee in condemning Quentin Tarantino's hit film Django Unchained, and like the infamous auteur, he hasn't even seen it. "I refuse to see it. I'm not going to pay to see it. But I've read the screenplay, and I have 25 family members and friends who have seen it, and have had thousands of conversations about this movie, so I can tell you frame by frame what happens," said Smiley in an interview with the Daily Beast. In the same interview, Smiley calls out Tarantino for what he considers his "arrogance" and slams the filmmaker's criticism of the legendary TV miniseries Roots. In a previous interview with the Daily Beast, Tarantino said, "When you look at Roots, nothing about it rings true in the storytelling, and none of the performances ring true for me either." "It didn't move me because it claimed to be something it wasn't," the director added. Smiley also lamented the lack of commitment on Hollywood's part to bringing a more historically accurate film about slavery to the big screen. "I'm troubled that Hollywood won't get serious about making an authentic film about the holocaust of slavery but they…
The nation is still in shock from the tragic massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Singer-songwriter R. Kelly is trying to help heal those affected through his music. R&B's Pied Piper released the tribute song "I Know You're Hurting" to Newtown's slain children. The gospel song features an all-children's choir singing poignant lyrics like "I know you're hurting/ I hear you crying, but come tomorrow, there's a place you can go/ Find the blue skies/ Hear the choir sing/ Feel the power of a miracle." while it is Kellz's song, he never actually sings a whole verse. http://theurbandaily.com/2016383/r-kelly-tribute-song-sandy-hook-massacre-victims-newtown-connecticut/

Rihanna Stars in Barbados Tourism Ad

Rihanna really wants you to go to Barbados. The "Diamonds" singer is back as a tourism ambassador for her home country with sexy new ads for the Caribbean island. (She has also been in 2010 Barbados ads, check one out in the slideshow below.) The multi-faceted campaign, which will be run entirely through social media, will continue through the end of February, reports Breaking Travel News. It kicked off with Rihanna posting images to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #Barbados. In a video for the campaign, Rihanna can be seen engaging in what are assumed to be typically Barbadian activities like bike riding through the woods or playing dominoes on the beach, as well as looking generally gorgeous while frolicking on the beach. Her song "Diamonds" plays in the background. According to the Daily Mail, the effort is to showcase a side of the country other than its west coast beach resorts. A microsite is also to come as part of the promotion that will differentiate "the wealth of experiences available on the island and the crucial factors between what makes some people travellers and some people tourists," reports Breaking Travel News. More Rihanna clips are also on…

Drake seeks profits from ‘YOLO’ catchphrase

Rapper Drake is largely credited with popularizing the acronym YOLO, which is derived from the phrase "you only live once." "Now she want a photo, you already know, though/ You only live once: that's the motto ni**a, YOLO," rapped Drake on his 2011 track "The Motto". Now that mainstream businesses like Walgreens and Macys are making a fortune selling attire with the YOLO label, Drake wants a piece of the action. The hip-hop star recently tweeted images from those two chains and complained openly about why he hasn't been reimbursed for his role in promoting the brand. "It's unclear if Drake has a trademark for anything and/or everything YOLO or if he just expects people to send him checks when they print up clothing. Of course, he's not the only person in the United States looking to horde all the YOLO cash to himself — there are over 100 YOLO trademark applications either live or dead in the United States for everything from cologne to dog collars (perfect stocking stuffers, if you're running super late)," writes Jordan Sargent for Gawker. http://thegrio.com/2012/12/26/drake-seeks-profits-from-use-of-yolo-catchphrase/
