Itʼs that time of year again to roll out the turkey, honeybaked ham, candied yams,
greens, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, red velvet cake...well, at least thatʼs how my
family does it. So many of us get caught up in the trimmings and delicacies that
tantalize our taste buds. Yet, we fail to count our blessings and thank God for all His
In this fast paced society, we become so inundated with holiday commercialization,
shopping, and food consuming that we fail to embrace the essence of true thanksgiving.
One expression, two words..."thank you"! The exclamation "thank you" is a polite
declaration used when acknowledging a gift, service, or compliment. Itʼs one thing to
say it, but itʼs another thing to show it.
So many times we approach the holidays with a hand out to receive, rather than to give.
If all youʼre focused on is what you can RECEIVE, than youʼve missed the purpose of
ThanksGIVING. For many people, Thanksgiving is just another holiday, for others itʼs
how they live each day. Everyday is a day of thanksgiving!
Some of us have lost family, friends, jobs, and homes. In spite of it all, we canʼt lose our
hope and we canʼt lose our faith. The power of hope and faith will surround us with
strength, in the midst of struggle and weakness. Your best days are not behind you,
theyʼre still ahead of you! Scripture reminds us to give thanks in all circumstances and
situations (I Thessalonians 5:18). You can look around and see that despite hardship
and negative experiences, youʼre still here! Without a shadow of a doubt, youʼre
Today, donʼt just express thankfulness for what you have, be thankful for who you are.
Through adversity youʼve become stronger. The fact that youʼve made it this far, is
nothing short of a blessing. Just being alive is a reason to give thanks. Youʼre too
blessed to be stressed and depressed!
The saying goes, "not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the
true measure of our thanksgiving." Stop focusing on what you donʼt have, look at what
you do have and use it. If you continue to focus on what you donʼt have...you wonʼt
have. Be content and be thankful. If all you have to give is your time and love, thatʼs
enough. Thanks and giving, goes a long way.
The truly thankful continue to give thanks, even when the holiday is over. The more
youʼre thankful, the more youʼre blessed. The more you give, the more you receive. The
more you refuse to be BITTER, the BETTER you will become. A life of thanksgiving
improves your state of living.
Try going through your day counting your blessings, instead of your problems and watch
what happens. The song "Thank You" by Walter Hawkins said, "it couldʼve been me
outdoors, with no food or clothes...thank you Lord for all youʼve done for me." When you
look at your life and see how God has blessed and brought you to this point, you canʼt
help but holler, "Thank You"!
You donʼt need a holiday to be thankful, everyday is a day of thanksgiving. Thank God
for all of His blessings and move forward expecting greater things ahead!
